Mai Tam - The Heart of Dawn
Opened in July 2005, Mai Tam is an effort of
Camillian religious who works in Pastoral
Committee of PLWHA of Archdiocese of Ho Chi
Minh city.
HIV/AIDS pandemic has spread into the general
population of Vietnamese people especially
women, housewife and children. In recent years,
many mothers, women discovered they have HIV
only after their husbands admitted to hospital in
the stage of AIDS or when they go for maternal
check up. Yet, right after their husbands died,
nothing is left for them, many were abandoned.
Many children infected and affected by HIV were
left alone, lack of support, cannot go to school. In
this context that our Mai Tam center was opened.
- Reduce the pain and impact of living with
HIV/AIDS on the poor and vulnerable
women and children living with HIV/AIDS
through Care - Treatment - Social
complimentary Support.
- Help the surrounding communities and
the relatives come to a better knowledge,
understanding and skills in HIV
prevention and promote empathy,
acceptance and supports for PLWHA to
live a dignity and qualitative life
Through the help and support of many generous
hearts, in the past year we were able to provided
care and treatment for 50 orphan and vulnerable
children living with HIV/AIDS. 15 mothers and
women were receiving life skill training and
generate income for independent living.
Most recently through the help of GAP INC and
friends our Mai Tam Creation - Flower and gift
shop were opened as part of our income
generation activity to provide jobs and to
empower our mothers and women living with
HIV/AIDS. This is also our effort to reduce stigma
and discrimination by raising public awareness
that people living with HIV can still contribute to
the good of society with their own values and
dignity.
